R&D Lab Technician - Ceramic Arts

REPORTS TO THIS POSITION TITLE  Ceramic Arts R&D Manager

PURPOSE

The R&D Lab Technician is responsible for performing assigned laboratory tests and development work as directed by the Ceramic Arts R&D Manager. This role is also responsible for implementation and maintenance of proper testing protocols while ensuring overall product and process quality. Cross training with Quality Control Technician(s) is required and QC duties will be assigned as needed.

POSITION ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE FOLLOWING KEY RESULTS

  • Perform bench lab assignments in support of new product development.
  • Conduct physical tests such as viscosity, specific gravity ad pH measurements, or other appropriate physical evaluations as determined by the Ceramic Arts R&D Manager.
  • Measure and mix samples for all fired and specialty products.
  • Prepare tiles for testing of product samples, being sure to match the product to the proper test method. Apply and evaluate versus standards.
  • Maintain inventory of raw materials needed for product development.
  • Maintain all standard colors as to quantity and quality. Perform necessary viscosity adjustments.
  • Conduct specialized testing as prescribed by the Ceramic Arts R&D Manager.
  • Collaborate with customer service to provide technical information and support to customers.
  • Document and maintain thorough development history and associated records.
  • Maintain color archives for products requiring color evaluations.
  • Take on projects from Leadership as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • A college degree in Chemistry or Math is preferred.
